The Unrelenting Passage of Time
By: Clara Pressey
Crescendos and decrescendos of action pass from day to day.
A minor, melancholy chord this month,
A major, buoyant chord the next.
There are pauses —
Rests —
And then measures without break.
Tensions rise and they release.
And then the song stops.
Its effect doesn’t, though.
It rings in your ears, your heart, your soul-
A resonating presence that stops things from being the same.
And a new song begins.
