Notturno

By: Athena Zapantis

Inspired by Notturno Op. 54 no. 4 by Edvard Grieg

Heartbeat growing ever so slightly,

Weeping birdsong in the distance

My meandering feet, the rustling leaves

But—my footsteps halt

My ears listen

The saddened bird

It follows and sings

With sorrow—has it lost

As much as I have?

My heart beats on

She hears my woe

And flies away

I’m flying with her and I listen

To her story, her song

I understand her

I see it, finally

That there is no sorrow to be had

When birds find reasons to cry

I cannot forget

That my sorrow

Is at least accompanied by a heartbeat
