A Performer’s Cycle

By: Nicole Yeo

he stands on the platform

hands trembling, breath stuttering

his lack of sight amplifies

sounds of the audience muttering

red velvet rises

lights flash and color

spots light his face

everything else seeming duller

he takes a deep breath

eyes fluttering closed

teeth shine as lips part

and out comes the prose

in the blink of an eye

the show has ended

and so has everything

on which he’s depended

it’s time to question

how he’ll fill his days

no performance to work toward

until the cycle replays.
