A New Leaf

Today is the day

I’ll be the best I can be

I promise to stay

The greatest version of me

Perhaps I’ll pledge to run

Or maybe—do I dare?

Daily, call mom a ton

Maybe I’ll vow not to swear

I think I’ll promise to eat better

Or invest in my career

Send my dad letters

Smile when I look in the mirror

No — none of that sounds right

I can’t settle for mediocrity

In any part of my life!

I can do better. Honestly.

I know what I have to do

It won’t be fun

But it’s long overdue

I’ll practice! I’ll get it done!

I’ll be a world-class performer

I’ll get to Carnegie Hall

Work hard every day

And I’ll be there. I can’t wait.
